A few extra bits on Moon Girl to follow this morning's post.

Shelly Moldoff's introduction, from Moon Girl #6-

...and the original art for it, if you like that sort of thing-

Here's the art for one of issue #8's splash pages that we saw previously-

...and, just for Kid - because of the blog timing - here's an advertisement that links our posts:

Moon Girl and Dandy together!
(Sorry, folks - that makes so little sense, i know)

  1. I wonder if they knew of the UK Dandy Comic when they launched their own? I also wonder if Frank Hampson and Marcus Morris knew about the US Dan Dare (in Action Comics if memory serves) when they used the name for their hero in Eagle? Whaddya think, 3?

  2. I'm still trying to sort out Dennis The Menace.

This was a full decade after The Dandy launched, but i don't know how much awareness of magazines across the Atlantic existed at the time. How long has this country been trapped in the If-we-didn't-make-it,-it-doesn't-count mentality?

I always thought Eagle's Dan Dare came first. Maybe because he was so much more iconic.

    1. Nah, our Dan appeared in 1950 - yours was around 12 years earlier. Could just be a coincidence though. Apparently, Eagle's Dan's name came from the old Sunday School saying "Dare to be a Daniel" - at least that's the official explanation. However, as Eagle was intended as a wholesome response to 'violent' US comics, it seems likely that the 'Reverend' Marcus Morris would've been aware of the name.

  3. Not necessarily. People not infrequently form opinions from a minority sampling on a subject. Sometimes even just from second hand reports. So it's quite possible he was ignorant of the previous usage of the name.
Either way, Eagle used the name well and created a character that inspired a great many over the years while the original is all but forgotten.
I don't know that i'd ever heard that saying when i taught sunday school, though. Different country and different times. (and i was left alone to talk about bears if needed to keep the wee ones in line)

    1. That's true, but sometimes people just steal. I think he wrote an article about US 'crime and horror' comics though, well before Eagle. (I'll have to check.) Not 100% sure, but I think 'Dare To Be A Daniel' may be a Sunday School song.

  4. Ah, memory didn't serve. It was Whizz Comics #2 (which was actually the 1st ish) that Dan Dare appeared in.
