One of these days we'll finally get to The Pertwillaby Papers, Don Rosa's old comic from the Rocket's Blast ComicCollector. But, for the moment, let's jump back to 1977 when the first Star Wars movie was released. Here's a lovely observational piece from Don, aided & abetted by William Fugate:

I've often mentioned the similarities of those two properties, except that it's pretty clear that Luke is the Dorothy counterpart--both were orphans left to be raised on desolate farms (even in Baum's book, Kansas was unrelentingly gray, as opposed to the vivid colors of Oz), and then swept up by events beyond their control to play a leading part on a larger stage.

That was pretty much what i was thinking, too. I can see why he went with that line-up, but Luke seems more right for Dorothy. Though both did have a close relationship with Artoo, so that link works either way.

,,,actually, looking again at the line-up i see it differently now.
ReplyDeleteHan is the "If I Only Had A Brain" scarecrow leaving both Leia and Luke together to embody Dorothy.
That works.
I noticed that after I commented. I guess Luke & Leia have to share being the Dorothy, since Ozma wasn't in the movie to give Leia her proper Oz counterpart.
