As noted in previous comments by our local Ferstadt Fan, this cover evokes Ferstadt's mural work. |
That last image has to be one of the most "Pre-Code" covers i've seen on a superhero comic book. Fairly grim for a 75 year old comic.
all covers by Louis Ferstadt for the respective magazines
Fantastic stuff! What a great page to open, so much energy in his work with lovely colours. Really good to see those altogether.
ReplyDeleteIf you do not mind I just wanted to say that I have a conflict with myself with Four Favorites number 8 not being his work and possibly no 17? I know that he is credited all over for these and as I mentioned before I am not an artist or expert so I do not like to judge a piece when it has been credited but they just do not jump out at me the same. I know it is not easy with others having a similar style in his studio any way I just have to ad that and make a fool of myself! Thanks for those. Ferstadt Fan.
Checking the Grand Comics Database shows a question mark after Ferstadt's listing for the cover of #8, but they seem fairly certain that #17 is his work.
ReplyDeleteMy confidence in determining artists has diminished greatly in recent years, so I'll rely on others.
The situation gets more complicated, of course, when throwing in the fact that Louis Ferstadt was a studio as well as an artist, so name credits could easily become entangled and confused. I'm just going to enjoy the covers unless someone comes up with confirmation of another creator.
As a side note, something i rarely mention is relevant here. While not the biggest images available on the net, some of these covers are the best you'll find due to photo-restoration work done to restore them. It's something not infrequently done around here, but more of Ferstadt's covers required repairs than any single previous post.
