No Movie Matinee or even Sunday Funnies today. Here's 3 Frank Frazetta illustrations for Movies to hold you over. I'll be back in a couple days. After The Fox:
I remember the movies themselves, but I don't recall seeing these illustrations before. If I'd had to guess the artist, I might have said Jack Davis. Or maybe even Sergio Aragones for the first one.
I tend to associate Frazetta with covers for fantasy and adventure paperbacks. Tarzan, Conan, etc.
There was a YouTube video by Comic Book Girl 19 about Frazetta's career. I learned a few things I didn't know before. He was a body builder, and used himself as a model for those barbarian heroes. Also, he suffered a stroke that paralyzed his right arm, so he learned to draw left-handed.
Can you comprehend relearning to draw like that with your non-dominant hand? That's mind boggling.
Frazetta's paintings were so awesome that they tended to overshadow his other works. He did some terrific comics, and obviously turned out some more cartoony work, like the poster art above. I agree that he's traipsing around in Jack Davis's turf here.
If you like these, btw, you'll want to catch this week's Friday Fun & Games. These pics were pulled from the pile used to make an Identify-The-Movie poster art quiz. (Not just Frazetta)
