Saturday Night Movie - Mutant Beach Party!

I hope you're familiar with late '80s Marvel Mutants, because that's where we're going with tonight's feature.
With The New Mutants movie coming (eventually) with heavy influence from Bill Sienkiewicz's visually ground-breaking period on the title, it seems like a good time to visit that period... sort of.

After all - one can frequently get  a better look at cultural artifacts by examining the reflections of the time. And for tonight's tale, we have perhaps the best possible combination of talent for that view. Kurt Busiek's reputation for his knowledge of comics, character & series history and the intricate delicacies of the medium are nigh legendary. I can think of no one better suited to take on Sienkiewicz's stylings than Kyle Baker, the only artist to touch his liberated inks back in the day. (Not to mention Kyle's own incredible sense of comic design and story telling)

So pop the corn, or the cap on the brew, or both, and kick back for our two part Mutant Beach Party! from 1988 -

Our apologies.
That was obviously the wrong reel, it being from tomorrow's matinee.
The projectionist has been sacked, and we now proceed with our Feature Presentation.

Blue Mary Finale

Welcome back to our Blue Monday celebration of Mary Fleener's work - step right in!

Before we take a look at some of her covers, let's take a quick peek at a few comics.
This one seems right at home with Fleener's visual style-

NOTE: The following 2 pages, and much of Mary's artwork below,
contains nudity and has been moved to our back room for adult content.
Please follow this link to The Other Voice Of ODD! archive

How's your Lawrence?

Confused?
The Swiss publication, Das Magazin, has a feature entitled Werke der Weltliteratur (Works Of World Literature) in which they ask artists to translate a classic novel into a single comic page. As might be expected with such an endeavor, it helps tremendously if you're familiar with the original material.

Here's a couple more from Mary:

Yes, she does use words! (In case you were starting to wonder)
Of course, she may incorporate said words into the art...

Mary's works are as uniquely personal expressions as her artwork might suggest. The source material is often her own life and surroundings, and the events shaping her world. So, it might help a bit to know a little about her, eh?
Let's let her tell it:

I can relate. Creating my artwork is my best therapy. (I sure hope we get that system fully functional soon so i can resume therapy)

You were promised Covers with you Comics, so let's view some now.
Here are 10 covers from Mary Fleener -

Mary is the kind of Twisted Sister i quite enjoy. We'll look more at some of her longer comics on another day - we've already got a pretty full post with three cubed pics.
So let's wrap with a just few more bits & pieces of Fleener flair -

I'm so feeling the Coppertone.
I may have to use that last piece as a colouring book page and have fun with it.

While i'm doing that, you can learn more about, and see more from, Mary Fleener at her website. Perhaps more importantly, you buy some of her original paintings, too.

Who's Your Funnies

Winter is here, and i seem to be in hibernation mode. Doing double duty on the sleeping. Urg.

I find myself nodding off after only a few hours of wakefulness. In no small part, i'm sure, that's the system replenishing itself after depletion, but it's definitely a function of the shorter days and colder weather, too.

So, the point of this little ramble, eh?
Posts are running a little later lately while i'm running off-kilter.
But they'll get here eventually.

For our Sunday Morning Funnies, we continue with our Whovian cartoons, courtesy of Tim Quinn and Dicky Howett, and starting from their first collection together of Time Lord Ticklers - The Doctor Who Fun Book.

but, have you noticed? It's getting crowded out there...

Every now and then, they sprinkle in a short bit of story among the various teasers and tidbits-

And if we jump to the end of the 2nd collection (Bigger On The Inside), we find an ending and beginning...

Let's close out this bit with a spot of colour, eh? From the Doctor Who Annuals '92 & '94:

Only two more weeks and a day...

Doctor Who Fun Day '88

1988...
The Doctor had only 25 series/seasons under his belt - a half a dozen lifetimes ago. Now (s)he's bigger than ever, and the 50th anniversary has already passed on by. Modern audiences on this side of the Atlantic may have only the barest familiarity with the 20th century incarnations of our favorite Time Lord, and the first 8 regenerations. For you folks, just assume anyone you can't place in these cartoons is The Doctor. He's not always so uptight about crossing one's own timeline.

But, our theme for yesterday & today's Fun & Games is The Doctor and The Daleks, with our puzzles coming from the Annuals for both. So let us pause and reflect upon the most famous Daleks of all time...

Now for a word from the opposition...

Yesterday's tease of The Deano* also came from today's playground - the 2nd** in a series of books from Tim Quinn and Dickie Howett, the creators of the Doctor Who? cartoon that ran in Doctor Who Magazine.

*(The Deano is a play on the famous UK magazine, The Beano. The first strip presented on yesterday's feature, Doc The Menace is a take on the Brit incarnation of Dennis The Menace, which was referred to recently in the comments. (see what you miss if you don't read them?))

**(The first was The Doctor Who Fun Book. We'll get there, i'm just not very linear)
