Tricky Bonus Quiz:

I'll explain why this quiz is tricky in tomorrow's Saturday Solutions.

  1. 3. Spark Plug
    4. Whatever object he appeared to be, it was red and yellow, like his costume.
    5. Steamboat Willie.

    9. I know the character was in a strip by George Carlson in Jingle Jangle Comics, but I have no idea what the name of the kingdom was.

    10. J. Edgar Hoover, FBI director.

In his book The Great Comic Book Heroes, Feiffer said that a lot of WWII comic book stories ended with the hero being thanked or congratulated by FDR or Hoover, "the president and vice president of the US, as far as comics were concerned."

  2. The image of Steamboat Willie (the Mickey Mouse character) serving as Billy Batson's valet wants to be drawn.
Just Steamboat, but Steamboat Willie is funnier.

Thanks very much for that answer to #12. I was clueless and you not only provided the answer, but quoted context. Beautiful!

    Thanks again for that.

    1. I have never actually seen a story with Billy Batson's valet; maybe they are too politically incorrect to be reprinted. My impression is that the character was a stereotypical bumbling black butler, like the characters played by Mantan Moreland, Willie Best, and Eddie "Rochester" Anderson.

My only source of information about the character is the essay by Richard Lupoff about the original Captain Marvel in the book All In Color For a Dime. IIRC, he referred to Billy's valet as Steamboat Willie. So maybe Lupoff conflated the character with Mickey Mouse. Then again, maybe he just said "Steamboat" and my memory is playing tricks.

  3. And, obviously, I meant #12 when I said 10, but you figured it out anyway.

  4. It's probably a bit worse than you're imagining. I'll pull some stuff to do a short post on Steamboat this week. He only appeared in a dozen issues of 3 different comics, so there's not a whole lot to cover.

I just assumed you were using a base 12 math system and that 10 was still a correct notation when read properly.
