Jack Rabbit & Lockjaw The Not-Dog

Sleep continues to grow more erratic, leaving me less and less functional between slumber sessions - what there is of them. But finally grabbed enough Zs to make words, so let's pretend this is Sunday Morning Funnies - even if the sun is setting in these parts.

A few years back, during the King Kirby 100, we got a gander at some of Jack Kirby's Funny Animal comics. Lockjaw The Alligator and Earl The Rich Rabbit ran in Punch & Judy Comics back in 1947. I kind of thought i'd ran them all, but apparently not. So here's another trio of tales from The King in a different style -

BTW - it's worth noting that Earl The Rich Rabbit debuted a year before Scrooge McDuck, so there's no copyrabbiting happening here...

Jack could have had a very different career path, no?

Now to go see if maybe caffeine and food will help...

Kirby Komics (King Kirby 075)

Welcome once again to Sunday Morning Funnies. For our first selection this morning, let's jump all the way back to 1947, to Punch & Judy Comics, v.3 #1. Jack Kirby is drawing Earl, The Rich Rabbit, a precursor to Disney's Uncle Scrooge, who debuted the following year-

I have to say, this makes me want to see more Jack Kirby cartoon work. He would have kicked ass in this market, too.
How about some parody work? In Crazy, Man, Crazy magazine, he illustrated an adaptation of the 1955 John Wayne film, Blood Alley, in a piece entitled

BLOODSHOT ALLEY

The piece included text that stood separate from the illustrated adaptation, so we'll ignore it. Jack's illustrations are covered with the captions:

Okay, some of our readers >*cough cough*< might be less than thrilled reading a parody of something they've never seen; probably never heard of. So how about we wrap up today's funnies with a Jack Kirby drawn parody of one of his popular Marvel creations?

Now go thou forth and smile this day!

Saturday Morning Toons (King Kirby 045)

Jack Kirby ruled action comics with his dynamics and mastery of capturing energy on the static page.
Much as he was known for superhero adventures, he also spent time doing light comedy & cartoon books. For our Saturday Morning Toons, let's take a look at some of his work on Punch & Judy Comics in the late 40s.
His first published work in P&J was a simple one-pager:

I did a double-take when first seeing Lockjaw the Alligator. I thought Clonezone the Hilariator had gone time traveling...

Another of the funny animal strips in the old Punch & Judy comics was Earl, The Rich Rabbit (not Eat The Rich Rabbit...  man, my mind was sliding when looking through these old books)

Besides the funny animals, there was also an early Archie type teen comedy strip, Toby:

To wrap up, here are the covers for this mornings toons:
