When
Charlton picked up the rights to do an
Abbott & Costello comic in the 60s, they decided to capitalize on another blip on the cultural radar for a back-up feature.
Fractured Fairy Tales was a popular feature on
Jay Ward's Rocky & Bullwinkle show, and they tapped
Grass Green to draw a series of
Far Out Fairy Tales along with writer
Sergious O'Shaugnessy, with whom he was partnered in this morning's initial comic strip.
The first installment:

Talking of Abbott & Costello and fairy tales, did you ever see them in Jack & the Beanstalk? Daft as a brush, but quite funny. First saw it on BBC TV back in 1967, '68, & '69 (three years in a row), then the BBC lost the rights to show it until 1989, which is when I next saw it again. Still enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteDaft, yes. But, that's just another sort of odd, innit? So i'm in.
DeleteNow, at least.
My earliest impressions of some of the old greats like Abbott & Costello and Laurel & Hardy, along with The 3 Stooges, were literally butchered. American tv channels would pick up the broadcast rights and then cut the hell out of them - often chopping out all those 'boring' story bits to leave nothing but a series of almost unconnected slapstick skits. It wasn't until years later, after finding the un-savaged originals, that i gained a real appreciation for their work.
