Moon Madness With Buck & Wilma

We haven't seen nearly enough of Gray Morrow's works around here as yet. Let's use our recent look at Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers parodies as an excuse to fix that a little bit. (Actually, if i could have found my frelling copy of his Amora, we could have slipped him into the parodies proper.)

This tale from Heavy Metal magazine, written by Jim Lawrence with art by Morrow, isn't a parody, but it is an odd piece that feels like a distorted reflection in some ways, due to the weird world in which they find themselves...

  1. A promo/ad for the Buck Rogers comic strip revival by Lawrence and Morrow that began September 9, 1979. Not sure of the lead time for Heavy Metal but the September 1979 issue probably appeared only weeks before the resurrected comic strip debuted.

  2. I seem to remember that the cover date on Heavy Metal actually reflected the on sale date, at least back in those days.
Did the revival strip ever actually see print? Or was this essentially a sales pitch that didn't get picked up? I never saw it, but that was a busy time for me - kids were being born, the art career wouldn't hit for several years yet, and i was working multiple jobs to take care of things. I missed a lot of stuff happening in that period.

  3. Why, yes, Gray's BUCK ROGERS saw print. There was even a book collection of it. I used to run a Gray Morrow blog but now it's a Facebook group, well over 1000 Gray fans strong. I just shared this post with the group.

    1. Very cool to hear, i'll have to hunt it down.
And more cool to see that Gray's getting some well deserved love out there. Hermits don't do Facebook, but it's pleasing to know that they're there.

    2. I hardly ever leave the house except to mow the lawn, get the mail, or go to the grocery. To me Facebook IS my leaving the house. All my closest friends are virtual.

    3. Well, i'm with you on the hardly ever going out part. I don't have to go outside to get mail nor mow the lawn, so it's just hauling out trash and making supply runs. There's only a couple of humans who visit the cave, so most of my contact is via the net, but more direct via email.
With those few regular contacts, this blog is actually my primary social interaction with the outside world. (This is why it's so important for hermits to like themselves, since that's with whom we spend most of our time)
