Fun With Zoophilia

So that project i've been working on...

You know i did those ABCs of 1940s Funny Animals posts a couple weeks back? I talked about how that was what was dug out in only three days after noticing how amazingly many Funny Animal characters were in comics back in that decade. Well, did a little more digging since (and much more to go), as well as a bit more organizing. It's still in early stages of progress, but it now exists:

(Yes, this is a temporary logo)

Currently this is a soft opening. I'm linking it here, and i've opened it to public access, but it's still hidden from the search engines. That will change before too long, but i figured i'd give you folks an earlier look at what's going on, and what i've been doing with my down time lately. The Index Page will show you who's been listed thus far.

Sunday Morning E.C. Funnies

My mind has been in a bit of a deranged state this weekend. Let's embrace that and enjoy some more comics from Ellis Chambers this morning. Any cheap excuse, eh?

Nothing quite like those violent old E.C. comics that everyone got so upset about, eh?
(As mentioned previously, feeling a bit deranged, so just nod and follow along)

While working in a semi-zombie state, i prepped a comic that we already ran last weekend. However, since i was feeling bad about not cleaning up the quiz images, i spent some time de-aging the comic. Not a full restoration job (for example, i didn't fix the colouring to the right of the first panel), but much cleaner than the previous version, so here it is again -

A plus side to the semi-mindless state of things this weekend - rather than sinking into depression i've been getting a bunch of tedious no-brain work done on that project i mentioned a week or two back. I expect we'll be talking about it more right soon.

Saturday Monster Solutions

Dealing with my own monsters this weekend, so keeping this quick. Here's the answers to yesterday's Great Movie Monster Fun Quiz -

What's that? You don't recognize the scene from Star Wars shown in #7?
Maybe you should be listening to TC in the comments to the quiz, eh? He informs us that the scene comes from the "other" version of Mysterious Island. I'm disinclined to argue.

Jane Dodge - Former Fly Girl

To answer the question we left off with last time, it was Page Parks - Air Hostess who never appeared again. That seems appropriate since she wasn't truly a Fly Girl. Lee Preston of the Red Cross appeared in the first 9 issues of Crack Comics before fading into history. Jane Martin - War Nurse had the longest run, appearing regularly in the first 111 issues of Wings.

In 1946, another Fly Girl, Jane Dodge, made a rather drastic career change to Jungle Goddess in the pages of Zoot -

Jack Kamen drew the cover above. The writing credit for the introductory strip is unknown, and the artwork is uncertain, but a good educated guess is Matt Baker, who did indeed draw the next issue, and the cover as well. Matt, as you may recall, was the artist on another Fly Girl, Ginger Maguire - Sky Girl, and our No-Fly Girl, Canteen Kate.

After almost a dozen issues, Rulah took over Zoot and had her own title from #s 17-27, while also appearing in All Top Comics. She was regularly reprinted over the years and is fondly remembered by genre aficionados. That's something of a regular footnote for characters drawn by Matt Baker.

Jungle Goddesses/Jungle Queens/Jungletc.,. is another recurring topic planned for this blog if i can ever figure out what to call them. (And, y'know, get things organized)
