Sunday Morning Wolvertoons

Hey! I actually know what day of the week it is for a change, so i guess we should do some Sunday Morning Funnies, eh? I'm in the mood for some of Basil Wolverton's delightful oddities today, so it's all Wolverton this morning.

Most often we see his more famous creations like Spacehawk, Powerhouse Pepper, and Scoop Scuttle. Let's avoid them today and stick to the side-streets and back alleys of Wolvertown. His artwork appeared in all sorts of titles, sometimes making it easy to miss some of his work, even if one is a fan. Today's strips come from a variety of sources - Sub-Mariner (back when he was hyphenated), Human Torch (back when he wasn't Human), Tessie The Typist, Comic Comics, Joker Comics, Black Diamond Western, and Star Comics.

Some are one-shots, others, like Mystic Moot and his Magic Snoot (with over a dozen tales) were ongoing series that are often forgotten or overlooked today -

Just to be extra odd, Leanbean Green is a one-shot, even though there are three episodes. They appeared as consecutive pages in Joker Comics #17 -

Bingbang Buster, however, was another ongoing series, with over a dozen appearances -

This one is earlier than the rest, from back in 1938, and is not signed. The style is simpler than later works, but all indications (including Jerry Bail's note that he was working for the publisher at this time) are that this is Basil Wolverton in early days -

Dr. Dimwit was just slightly more than a one-shot, with just 3 appearances -

Inspector Hector brings us a two-page mystery for you to solve along with him -

We pause for spoiler space while you contemplate the mystery with some Funny Boners -

Okay - now we continue with page two of Inspector Hector and the solution to the Cartoon Crime Mystery -

Sunday Morning E.C. Funnies

My mind has been in a bit of a deranged state this weekend. Let's embrace that and enjoy some more comics from Ellis Chambers this morning. Any cheap excuse, eh?

Nothing quite like those violent old E.C. comics that everyone got so upset about, eh?
(As mentioned previously, feeling a bit deranged, so just nod and follow along)

While working in a semi-zombie state, i prepped a comic that we already ran last weekend. However, since i was feeling bad about not cleaning up the quiz images, i spent some time de-aging the comic. Not a full restoration job (for example, i didn't fix the colouring to the right of the first panel), but much cleaner than the previous version, so here it is again -

A plus side to the semi-mindless state of things this weekend - rather than sinking into depression i've been getting a bunch of tedious no-brain work done on that project i mentioned a week or two back. I expect we'll be talking about it more right soon.

Sunday Funnies - Cat & Walrus

So... apparently it's the weekend and i kind of missed Friday and Saturday. The dangers of existing outside of time in general. No going to back to fix things now, but we can do some Sunday Funnies, even if we're running a little late.

No, The Cat & The Walrus wasn't a strip - nobody threw darts at the animal board to come up with that particular pairing - at least, not that i've encountered thus far. We just have some strips prepped for Walrus Whopper and Cosmo Cat, so let's enjoy them together, eh?

First up, the return of Walrus Whopper and his tall tales. This time we start with his first appearance (creators unknown) from Animal Antics #1 -

...and another fish story from a few issues later...

Meanwhile (both premiered in the spring of 1946), over in All Top Comics, Cosmo Cat was making his debut in the first issue, written by Pat Parrish with art from Ellis Chambers. (That's not an "official" assessment - but it certainly seems to be the case to me, both in artwork and in the title lettering.)

And, again, there is no official listing for the artist on this next strip, but Ellis Chambers seems most likely, and that could be a partially obscured 'E.C.' at the bottom of panel one -

Okay. I know what day it is now. Guess i'd better go get tomorrow's calendar ready to run...
